Duel Mode: Quick Combat Tips & Tricks

Duel mode is Consuming Void at its most competitive and intense. Two black holes enter. One black hole leaves. You’ve got 60 seconds to outgrow your AI opponent, and every decision you make in that minute determines whether you consume them or they consume you.

The Rules of the Duel

The format is straightforward. You and an AI-controlled black hole spawn simultaneously in an arena filled with consumable objects. Both of you start the same size. Both of you can consume the same objects. And when one of you grows large enough relative to the other, you can consume your opponent directly.

The match ends in one of three ways: you consume the AI, the AI consumes you, or the 60-second timer runs out. If time expires, the larger black hole wins. This timer is crucial — it means you can’t play infinitely safe. You need to be growing, and you need to be growing faster than your opponent.

First 10 Seconds: The Opening Rush

The opening of a Duel match is the most important phase. Both players are identical in size, which means every object you consume that your opponent doesn’t is a direct advantage. Those first 10 seconds set the trajectory for the entire match.

Sprint toward the nearest cluster of objects the moment the match begins. Don’t hesitate, don’t assess — move. Your AI opponent will do the same, so the player who reaches the first cluster wins the early mass advantage. Position matters at spawn: scan quickly and identify which cluster is closest to you versus your opponent, then commit.

If you and the AI converge on the same cluster, don’t panic. Eat what you can and then disengage. Fighting over scraps wastes time that both of you could spend consuming uncontested objects elsewhere. The real advantage comes from finding and claiming territory the AI isn’t in.

Reading the AI

Duel mode’s AI opponents follow identifiable patterns, and learning to read them gives you a significant edge. The AI typically follows a proximity-based consumption strategy — it moves toward the nearest consumable object, eats it, then redirects to the next nearest object.

This means the AI is predictable but efficient. It doesn’t waste time, but it also doesn’t think strategically. It won’t sacrifice short-term gains for positional advantage. You can exploit this by thinking ahead while the AI only thinks in the moment.

The AI also has a “caution zone” around you. When you’re close to the same size, the AI maintains distance. When you’re larger, it flees. When it’s larger, it pursues. Recognizing these behavioral shifts tells you the relative size difference without needing to visually compare. If the AI starts moving toward you aggressively, you’re behind — act accordingly.

The Territory Split

Within the first few seconds, the arena naturally divides into your territory and the AI’s territory based on where each of you starts consuming. Recognize this split early and dominate your side before pushing into contested space.

The optimal Duel strategy isn’t to chase the AI — it’s to eat everything on your side of the arena faster than the AI eats everything on its side. Once your side is cleared, you’ll either be larger (and can push into the AI’s territory to consume its remaining objects) or roughly equal (in which case the contested middle becomes the deciding battleground).

Think of the arena in thirds: your third, the AI’s third, and the contested middle. Claim your third. Raid the middle. Only push into the AI’s third when you have a clear size advantage.

Consumption Timing and Size Advantage

Size advantage in Duel mode isn’t binary — it’s a spectrum. Being slightly larger than your opponent means you can consume them, but it also means the “consume” interaction takes longer and gives them time to escape. Being significantly larger means instant consumption with no escape possible.

This matters for your approach strategy. If you’re only marginally bigger, don’t chase the AI directly. Instead, continue consuming neutral objects to widen the gap. The AI will spend energy fleeing, consuming nothing, while you continue growing. Every second the AI spends running is a second you spend eating.

If you’re significantly larger, go for the kill immediately. The AI will flee, but your size advantage also means you’re faster (larger black holes have wider pull ranges). Cut off escape routes and corner the AI against the arena edge.

Quick Tips for Consistent Wins

Don’t mirror the AI. If the AI moves left, you don’t need to follow. Let it go and eat what it left behind. Mirroring wastes time in pursuit when you could be growing.

Use the arena edges. Objects along the arena boundaries are often untouched because both players naturally gravitate toward the center. Sweep the edges for free mass while the AI works the middle.

Watch for size parity traps. When you and the AI are nearly identical in size, neither can consume the other. This stalemate wastes precious seconds. If you’re stuck in parity, disengage immediately and find uncontested objects. Breaking parity through neutral consumption is faster than trying to gain a marginal edge through direct competition.

Anticipate the AI’s path. Since the AI moves to the nearest object, you can predict where it will go next. Use this to either beat it to a valuable cluster or to steer your own path away from interference.

Timer awareness. At 30 seconds remaining, assess your position. If you’re larger, play conservatively — maintain your lead and avoid risky plays. If you’re smaller, you need to take calculated risks and seek out high-value objects. If you’re roughly equal, the next 30 seconds need to be your most aggressive.

Corner consumption. Corners of the arena often accumulate debris that both players overlook. A quick corner sweep can net you surprising mass gains with zero competition.

Advanced Duel Strategies

The Fake Pursue. Move aggressively toward the AI as if you’re going for a direct consume, even when you’re roughly the same size. The AI’s caution behavior will trigger, causing it to flee — wasting its time while you swerve to a nearby object cluster instead. You’ve just bought yourself free eating time while the AI repositioned for nothing.

Cluster Denial. If you spot a dense cluster of objects near the AI, sometimes it’s worth consuming a few key objects from that cluster even if it’s slightly out of your optimal path. Removing the highest-value items from the AI’s territory reduces its growth potential.

The Late Rush. With 15 seconds left and a slight disadvantage, abandon normal consumption and sprint to the area of the arena with the highest remaining object density. Rapid consumption in the final moments can swing the size difference. The AI maintains its methodical approach regardless of time — you can be more explosive.

Arena Control. After clearing most neutral objects, positioning becomes everything. Place yourself between the AI and the remaining objects. Force the AI to either approach you (risky for it if you’re larger) or go the long way around (wasting time).

Difficulty Scaling

Duel mode AI comes in different difficulty levels, and understanding each helps you calibrate your strategy.

Easy AI makes suboptimal pathing decisions and occasionally pauses between consumption targets. Exploit these pauses by being relentless — never stop eating. Easy AI is a good training ground for practicing the territory split concept.

Medium AI is efficient and consistent. It rarely makes mistakes but doesn’t use advanced tactics. Beat it by being more strategic — think about positioning and cluster priority rather than just eating the nearest object.

Hard AI is aggressive and fast. It competes for contested objects, uses the entire arena efficiently, and pursues you when it has an advantage. Against hard AI, execution speed matters more than strategy. You need to be fast, precise, and decisive.

Why Duel Mode Matters

Duel mode is the fastest way to improve at Consuming Void overall. The 60-second matches give you rapid iteration — you can play dozens of duels in a single session and learn something from each one. The competitive pressure forces efficient play, and the AI provides consistent practice opponents.

Skills learned in Duel — fast assessment, efficient pathing, competitive territory control — transfer directly to Armageddon mode and improve your Galaxy mode efficiency. If you want to get better at Consuming Void quickly, Duel is your training arena.

One minute. One opponent. Make every second count.
